Linux-The back bone of open source

‘Linux’  the great contribution of open source. Here in this post let us have a discussion about the history of this great operating System. The creator or inventor of the Linux is Linus Torvalds. Torvalds was a graduate student at University of Helsinki in Finland during the development of his first Linux kernel. That was in 1990′s when, Operating Systems like DOS,Mac OS and UNIX etc were the only available OS.

Proff.Tanenbaum was the inspiration of Linus behind the creation of Linux. He was a university professor there. He used to teach his students about operating systems using the code of UNIX,That time UNIX code was available on universities for study purposes and hence no problems of copyright or license. But later the free license of UNIX was removed, and legally they stopped the people from accessing and modifying the source code. UNIX was one of the effective tool for teaching operating system concepts. Since he lost his favorite tool he started thinking about a new one, to teach his students about the inner workings of a real OS. There was no such OS like UNIX hence he developed a small clone of UNIX and named it as MINIX.

The MINIX and it’s creator was a real inspiration for Linus Torvalds. Linus developed an OS based the concepts of UNIX, somewhat a clone of UNIX. He named it as Linux(Linus+UNIX). What he created was really small, Linux Version 2.0 -that was the name given to it. It was released on 1991 oct 5. A combination of  kernel and 3 simple utilities. The utilities were

  • bash- the terminal or a command line interface
  • update-used to manage file streams and their flushing
  • gcc- an efficient cpp compiler

What he did then, was the beginning of a new history. He posted his operating system on internet with it’s source code and made it available free for everyone. There started the great journey of Linux and open source. Now taking a little deviation towards the term GNU .

GNU is an open source movement founded by a computer programmer called Richard stallman from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980′s. It was an alternative proposal to the standard cooperate development model. GNU project was exactly started in 1983 by Richard. He concentrated on the idea of Free and Open Source Software(FOSS). According to the FOSS, the source code of software should be published free for everyone, Anyone can download, modify and regenerate and distribute the stuff.

There is a deeper relationship between GNU and Linux. The two great guys Linus and Richrard combined their concepts together and constructed an OS, named it as GNU-Linux. Linux is licensed under GNU General Public License(GPL) itself. GPL says that the the source code of the software need to be made freely available to anyone who wants it. Since Linux licensed under public license, anyone can download the source code, modify the code and re-build Linux kernel for free. But the Software giants like Microsoft, Apple etc follows the  EULA(End User License Agreement)  license which prevents the user from re-engineering their OS .

During the starting phase of Linux in early 90′s it was completely ignored by the computer society. The software giants not even noticed existence of Linux. They considered it as the madness of a computer nerd. But the time proved that it was not mad at all. Linux has been grown up to such an extend that many companies replaced their OS completely to Linux distributions in order to secure their systems and to enhance their flexibility. If we mention about India many great Educational institutions turned into LINUX and included Linux as the part of their courses.

The success of Linux is purely based on its Transparent nature and the freedom for the user. Now it is your turn to think. If you have not experienced the wonderful world of Linux, don’t fear to jump into to it. accept new good changes with the time.
