The Millennium Technology Awards Declared:Goes for Linus Torvalds and Dr. Shinya Yamanaka

Technology Academy Finland, announced the winners of The millennium Technology Prize  yesterday. The award goes to Dr. Shinya Yamanaka (director of Center for iPS Cell Research)and Linus Torvalds (the creator of Linux Kernel). This is World’s largest technology award distributed once in every two years for the technology innovations which can be categorized as life- enhancing. The prize amount will be greater than EUR 1 million. 

 WHY LINUS TORVALDS 

He was nominated for the award for his wonderful creation ‘Linux Kernel’- the great Operating System kernel that changed the narrow approach of the world towards computers and software. And Linux was a key factor in the growth of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software). 

That was in 1991, In that time Linux was considered as something useless and meant  only for techies. But the time proved that it was not a waste. Now After 20 years most of the servers on internet is running with Operating Systems based on Linux kernel. ABOUT Dr. SHINYA YAMANAKA
 
Dr.Shinya Yamanka is bio-researcher from Japan, doing his research about stem cells. Currently he is the director of iPS Cell Research and Application in Japan and he also serves as a professor in Frontier Medical Sciences at Kyoto University.
He introduced a new method for developing induced pluripotent stem cells for medical research,That was the discovery on which he had nominated for the Millennium technology award. This method was so helpful for the researches for the cure for cancer and motor neuron disease.  The researches on  personalized regenerative medicine have benefits from his discovery.
