For a beginner of Linux/Ubuntu there can be little confusions about the new environment. There are certain things that is very important to do after a fresh installation of Ubuntu. These things will help you to improve the working quality of your Ubuntu desktop environment. Note that these are specifically for the latest versions after Ubuntu 10.04

ADD ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE REPOSITORIES

There is a wonderful collection of software are available from third-party sources, as well as from the default Ubuntu software repositories. If you want to install software from a third-party software repository, you must add it to Ubuntu’s list of available repositories.

  •  Click on the Ubuntu Software Center icon in the Launcher, or search for Ubuntu Software Center in the search bar of the Dash.
  • When the Software Center launches, click Edit ▸Software Sources
  • You will be asked to enter your password. Once you have done that, switch to the Other Software tab.
  • Click Add and enter the APT line for the repository. This should be available from the website of the repository, and should look similar to: deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick main
  • Click Add Source then close the Software Sources window. Ubuntu Software center will then check your software sources for new updates. For that take terminal window (ctrl+alt+T) and type the following command.
             $ sudo apt-get update
INSTALL RESTRICTED EXTRAS

Codecs that support MP3s, .WMV videos or encrypted DVDs etc are not installed in Ubuntu11.10 by default due to some legal issues ,But they are available in the name Restricted extras. Installation of restricted extra packages will make you able to play mp3 and all kind of that things. Open terminal and type (excluding the $ symbol):

             $ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

For DVD playback support:

             $ sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
             $ sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

ACTIVATE ADDITIONAL DRIVER SOFTWARE

Check for additional drivers by clicking the session menu and selecting System Settings. In the Hardware section, click Additional Drivers. Wait a moment for Ubuntu to update its database.
Many of the driver software found in Additional Drivers are proprietary and their source code isn’t freely available. Therefore, Linux community developers are unable to fix any security or functionality problems in the driver. These drivers also cannot be installed automatically as part of Ubuntu. If you are willing to accept this limitation, activate the driver.If your graphics card (probably NVIDIA or ATI) or Your wifi device doesn’t get detected automatically.
Go to System Settings -> Additional Drivers and wait for the window to appear with driver options. Select the driver software you want to install and click on Activate. After installing the driver restart your computer.
